More Than Ink
Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones -
Peng Kang-Long Contemporary Ink Solo Exhibition

Dedicated to arts and culture, and aesthetics of space, Yi&C. has been bringing contemporary art to its audience with exhibitions that incorporate art into living spaces. Yi&C. offers a fresh and unique perspective on living by presenting a perfect mix of contemporary art and modern lifestyle. This year, Yi&C. is pleased to announce Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones – Peng Kang-Long Contemporary Ink Solo Exhibition, at the Yi&C. Contemporary Arts Gallery. Showcasing over 20 pieces of Peng's latest series, this exhibition provides an in-depth look into the artist's oeuvre, distinguished by his personal aesthetics and artistic fusion of East and West, past and present, as well as a new language of contemporary ink painting.
Known for his innovative ink painting, Peng Kang-Long bases his art practice in traditional shan shui painting with a contemporary twist, and stands as one of Taiwan's avant-garde contemporary ink painters. While his body of work roots in traditional ink painting, Peng, with applications of new mediums and techniques, has cultivated original ink aesthetics that are uniquely his own. His recent works have been shown in Taiwan and China, including at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan; Beijing International Art Fair, China; and Citizen Art Shanghai, China. His work is also in international private collections. In 2014, he was invited to show at Contemporary Literati – A Gathering at Sotheby's Hong Kong spring sales, and Art Apart Fair in Singapore.
In 2013, Peng Kang-Long opened viewers' eyes to a new horizon in ink art with his solo exhibition Verdure Traces. Manifesting an obvious change in style, the works in the exhibition portray delicate grass and flowers, instead of Peng's usual subject – the grandiose landscape. By presenting a microuniverse in the life of plants, Peng takes viewers on a spiritual journey to rediscover man's connection with nature.

Some might compare Peng's work to poetry; others would say it is more like an intriguing piece of prose. In his latest series Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones, Peng turns flowers and grass into a visual vocabulary that requires pondering. In the 20 new works, Peng boldly relinquishes poetic white space. Instead, he constructs a new world with a kaleidoscope of grass and flowers by filling the canvas with a multitude of plant details. He seems to have realized that white space only leads to more confusion for viewers, and rather carefully arranges the composition of his painting like a writer would with his prose, so as to leave visual clues for modern viewers who tend to appreciate the world through materiality。
This in fact characterizes Peng's work – a constant reflection on the state of Eastern ink painting in contemporary society. Since the exhibition Verdure Traces, Peng has been applying dian mo, a dotting technique in ink painting. In each rendering of wash, each layering of ink, Peng portrays common flowers and grass with extreme patience and care, allowing the picture in his mind to materialize on canvas. Wielding his paintbrush like a writer with his pen, Peng transforms his work into a poetic piece of prose that draws viewers in again and again.
In Western oil painting, layers of paint construct a concrete image on canvas that becomes a real, subjective existence. In Eastern ink painting, however, the paintbrush captures a contrast between black and white, a nonmaterial state of objectivity and spirituality. While this is where Peng's contemporary ink painting is based, he depicts a state of mind that is subjective and personal.
In Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones, Peng paints each cluster of flowers, grass, and trees with subtle details that construct the grand landscape in his mind. Deftly he paints with ease and intuition as he wields his paintbrush rendering the ink on paper. A magnificent landscape materializes, and upon closer look, one finds beauty in these vivid flowers and grass, in their unusual proportions on paper. It is in that moment of scrutiny that one dives in the pleasure of simply being in Peng's world, which unfolds at the tip of Peng's paintbrush. Viewers witness nature come to life as they see the fragrant flowers and grass, and majestic landscape in minute detail.

Peng once said that the Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones series is a reflection of his perspective on contemporary art. His intuitive creative process brings his flowers and trees to life, like organic cells multiplying on paper. These plants, at first glance, appear to be unconscious organisms growing under Peng's paintbrush, and gradually become a natural reality on paper. This transition not only sheds new light on traditional ink painting, but also allows the artist to transcend physical limitations by breaking spatial boundaries in nature, thereby gaining more creative freedom.
Just as French classic In Search of Lost Time broke new ground in the early 20th-century Western literature as one of the first stream-of-consciousness novels, the exhibition Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones held by Yi&C. this year provides an opportunity to examine Peng's latest series of work from a refreshingly unique angle. Reaching new heights in contemporary art, Peng transcends the boundaries of traditional shan shui as his work mirrors his state of mind at the moment of painting. The microuniverse of flowers, grass, trees, and stones allows viewers glimpses of the artist's mind and relationship with modern society. Not merely a contemporary ink painting exhibition, Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones documents a new progress in the contemporary ink genre.
Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones – Peng Kang-Long Contemporary Ink Solo Exhibition, is on view at the Yi&C. Contemporary Arts Gallery, from October 31 to November 27. The exhibition opens at 2:30 p.m., October 31, with an opening reception on the same day at 5:30 p.m. The artist will be present to meet art aficionados and the media. The highlight of the evening will be the unveiling of a 7-meter-long new work Peng made especially for this exhibition – Essence of Trees, Flowers, and Stones.
With an open mind and exquisite taste in art, Yi&C. embarks on a spiritual journey to enrich lives with a return to basic living needs. In Romance of Trees, Flowers, and Stones – Peng Kang-Long Contemporary Ink Solo Exhibition, Yi&C. sees an abundance of energy, fluid sense of space, and boundless sense of time, all of which compliments a modern living space. It is therefore, Yi&C.'s mission to keep discovering exciting contemporary art with growth potential that reflects a sophisticated taste in arts and culture.

Artist Bio│
One of Taiwan's contemporary ink artists, Peng Kang-Long is known for his innovative ink painting. Born in Hualian, he has cultivated a unique sense of space growing up among Hualian's verdant mountains. The towering, lofty mountains are the prototype of shan shui in his art practice. Breaking free from materialism, Peng instills a sense of isolation and solitariness in his work, pursuing the primitive roots and wild nature of man.

His recent body of work illustrates a contemporary perspective on traditional ink painting. Linking back to Eastern ink traditions with applications of new mediums and techniques, Peng has cultivated ingenious ink aesthetics that are uniquely his own. In recent years he has exhibited in Taiwan and China, including at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan; Beijing International Art Fair, China; and Citizen Art Shanghai, China. His work is also in international private collections. In 2014, he was invited to show at Contemporary Literati – A Gathering at Sotheby's Hong Kong spring sales, and Art Apart Fair in Singapore.
